1. DIY Nativity Set: Create a simple nativity scene using cardboard, craft sticks, or even recycled materials. Design and decorate figures for Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, angels, shepherds, and animals. Read the story from the Bible in Luke 2 and have the kids act out what they hear using the set.
2. Paper Plate Angels: Use paper plates to create angel figures. Kids can decorate them with feathers, glitter, and markers, symbolizing the angels’ messages. Talk about the times an angel appears in the Christmas story (to Mary, to Zechariah, and then to the shepherds).
3. Star Mobiles: Craft stars out of paper or cardboard, decorate them, and string them together to make a mobile representing the star that guided the wise men. Then, hide hid a baby Jesus figurine in your house and place the star somewhere near it. Have the kids pretend to be the wise men who are following the star to baby Jesus.
4. Cotton Ball Sheep: Create sheep using cotton balls glued onto paper or cardboard. Add details like faces and legs. Talk about how the shepherds took care of the sheep (who are not smart animals) and how we are like sheep who need a Good Shepherd, Jesus, to watch over us.
5. Puppets or Finger Puppets: Create puppets or finger puppets representing characters from the Christmas story. Encourage kids to use these to act out the events as you narrate the story.
6. Story Stones: Paint rocks with symbols or images representing different parts of the Christmas story. Kids can arrange these stones in order as they retell the story.
7. Create a Storybook: Help kids make their own illustrated storybooks about the Christmas story. They can draw or craft scenes for each part of the narrative.
