One of the amazing things about crochet is that you can make anything with very little knowledge of stitches. After learning the slip knot, chain stitch, and single crochet, you will be able to make hundreds of different projects! As important as it is to practice, I know the feeling of just wanting to make something. So because the single crochet stitch is the easiest crochet stitch to make, I’ve put together a list of free and easy crochet patterns that you can make with just the single crochet stitch! The best part? I’ll be updating this list of easy crochet projects as I find new patterns so this list will continue to grow.
What does SC mean in crochet?
SC in crochet means single crochet. This is probably the first stitch you will learn when you begin to crochet. After you’ve learned how to single crochet (see below), you can start making these patterns!
Practicing doesn’t mean you have to make a bunch of boring squares. You can crochet tons of different things using just single crochet!
All of the patterns in today’s roundup will help you practice the single crochet.
How do you start a single crochet stitch?
If you’ve never actually practiced the single crochet stitch, that’s where I suggest you start. Head over to this article to find a picture and video tutorial showing you how to start a single crochet stitch.
Once you practice enough that you’re feeling more comfortable, come back over here and try out some of these awesome single crochet patterns!
Is single crochet easy?
The single crochet is one of the easiest stitches to learn. It’s one of the four basic stitches and can be used to make hundreds of different projects.
One thing that can be tricky is keeping your edges straight. This might happen when you’re having trouble keeping track of the number of stitches you have in a row. If this sounds like you, you’ll want to make sure you’re not skipping the last stitch at the end of the row.
Here are some more tips for counting your stitches.
What can I crochet with single crochet?
I will say that a crochet dishcloth is a great pattern to start practicing. And you might think that there’s not much you can crochet with single crochet.
But really, there are TONS of things you can make with just the single crochet stitch. Take list very long list of free easy crochet patterns for example.
All of the patterns in this roundup use only single crochet stitches. Yet, there’s a huge variety of projects! Some of these patterns might also require the slip stitch too. But it’s even simpler than the single crochet.
Let me know in the comments which free crochet pattern you’re going to make first!
What is the easiest thing to crochet for a beginner?
All of the single crochet patterns I’ve included below are completely beginner friendly. But if you are just starting out some of these might look a little intimidating. If that sounds like you, the easiest thing to crochet is a blanket or something that consists of a repeat row.
Some of the easiest patterns from the list below are:
- Spring Meadow Baby Blanket (#2) – has a video tutorial for the Moss Stitch included
- Magnificent Mini Pouch (#5)
- Easy Modern Storage Baskets (#14) – requires holding two strands of yarn but includes a video tutorial that goes through the entire pattern
- Woven Crochet Baby Blanket (#17)
- Beginner Crochet Pillow Cover (#19)
- Beginner Crochet Coffee Cozy (#20)
- Woven Stitch Bookmark (#23)
Can you single stitch crochet a blanket?
Absolutely! You can use any of the basic stitches to create a blanket. And if you’re looking for something with more texture, try these beginner friendly blanket stitches.
Is single or double crochet better for a blanket?
Personally, I think double crochet stitches are better for a blanket. Why? Because single crochet takes a lot longer and it can create a stiff fabric if you’re not using the right crochet hook size.
If you are going to use single crochet for a blanket, I suggest going up at least 2 hook sizes that your yarn recommends.
How long does it take to single crochet a blanket?
How long it takes to single crochet a blanket depends on the yarn and hook size you’re using. It also depends on how much time you have to dedicate to crochet.
A single crochet blanket using medium weight yarn could take you months. If you’re using a super bulky yarn, that could cut your time in half.
BUT if you love crochet, it doesn’t matter how long it takes. You can also crochet smaller projects in between. Just enjoy the process!
What is the easiest and fastest crochet stitch?
The easiest and fastest crochet stitch really depends on the context. The single crochet is the easiest and fastest to make by itself. However, when it comes to making a blanket it takes the longest.
A double crochet blanket pattern works up faster than a single crochet blanket. And a double crochet is almost just as easy!
